After a very long, cold winter in Colorado, the spring season is FINALLY here! The weather’s getting warmer, the trees and flowers are starting to bloom, the grass is finally turning green – and it’s time to tackle that spring cleaning. Much like hard copy books, cameras, and rap, cleaning is one of those things that’s just better done old school. Here are some of the best old school cleaning tips that still work wonders today:
- Window Cleaning the Old-Fashioned Way – For streak-free windows, start by using newspaper, coffee filters, or an old t-shirt instead of paper towels. Then, in place of a store-bought glass cleaner, simply mix 1 cup of distilled water, ½ cup of white vinegar, and a ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Work from top to bottom spraying and wiping, and you’re on your way to beautiful crystal-clear windows you can enjoy all season.
- Clean Rugs Naturally – Instead of chemical-heavy carpet cleaners, go natural and use baking soda. Sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda on your rug, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then vacuum. The dirt and odors will disappear along with the baking soda!
- Refresh Wood Furniture – Has your wood furniture seen better days? Bring it back to life with some items you already have around the house. Combine two parts olive oil to one part lemon juice and use the mixture to wipe down wood tables, furniture, chairs, railings, and more.
- Dust with Coffee Filters – Old school meets new school when you use coffee filters to dust your electronics. Coffee filters are great to clean dust from TV screens, computer monitors, and other electronic screens without leaving fibers behind like other dust cloths do. You don’t even need a cleaning spray – wipe with a coffee filter and you’re done!
- Remove Shower Buildup with Vinegar – Is your shower head covered with those unsightly mineral deposits? No problem. Fill a sandwich bag with white vinegar, then secure the bag to the shower head with a rubber band. Let it sit for a few hours, then remove. Follow up by scrubbing with a soft toothbrush, and your shower head will be good as new with minimal effort.
